Penyerang Brazil, Ronaldo, penjaring utama sepanjang masa pada Piala Dunia dan Pemain Terbaik Dunia Persekutuan Bola Sepak Antarabangsa (FIFA) tiga kali, mengesahkan persaraan semalam pada usia 34 tahun.

Penyerang Corinthians yang menangis itu mengumumkan keputusannya pada satu sidang akhbar yang menyentuh perasaan di Sao Paulo, di mana dia turut mendedahkan mengalami satu masalah tiroid.

"Saya memberhentikan karier saya sebagai seorang pemain bola sepak profesional. Ia satu karier yang indah, menyentuh perasaan dan menakjubkan," katanya dengan suara yang terputus-putus.

"Dua tahun lalu, saya mengalami satu siri panjang kecederaan, satu demi satu, kaki dan otot. Kesakitan itu mendorong saya memikirkan untuk mengakhiri karier saya," katanya.

Terdahulu dia membayangkan harapan untuk bermain sehingga penghujung tahun tetapi kecederaan dan penyingkiran awal Corinthians daripada Copa Libertadores mendorongnya mengemukakan persaraannya.

Ketika satu tempoh 14 tahun yang prolifik, Ronaldo menjaringkan gol pada satu kadar yang prolifik bagi PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid dan AC Milan, sebelum kembali ke Brazil pada 2008.

Dia memenangi Piala Dunia dengan Brazil pada 2002, menjadi anggota skuad yang tidak bermain dalam pasukan juara 1994 dan menjadi penjaring utama dalam pusingan akhir Piala Dunia di mana dia menjaringkan golnya ke-15 pada kejohanan 2006 di Jerman.

As a footballer, practically everything has been said about the Brazilian soccer player, because of his worldwide fame. Regardless of all the talk, he is a footballing genius with incredible skill on the ball. Before his injury, Ronaldo was a player of great speed with the ability of carrying the ball over large distances. This has changed now, as he has gained weight and lost his youthful pelt. That makes him somewhat more predictable but not in any means less dangerous. In one-on-one confrontations, he can beat any defender on Earth. On air balls, the Brazilian soccer player is relatively mediocre.

Ronaldo plays with the typical Brazilian flair because of which he is adored by many fans. In recent times, he has become more experienced and street wise.
